A Nigerian heavyweight power-slap fighter, Kabiru Adediran, popularly known as “Hulk,” is making a name for himself in the growing global sport of slap-fighting, where he literally slaps opponents for a living.
The Lagos-born athlete, who has a background in boxing and MMA, has now channelled his skills into Power Slap, competing in major promotions such as Dana White’s Power Slap and Super Slap.
Hulk, who earned his nickname due to his muscular build and heavy-handed slaps, made his Power Slap debut at Power Slap 17, where he scored a first-round TKO victory over Daniyar Shakharov, announcing Nigeria’s presence in the sport.
In an interview with the BBC, Hulk explained why he prefers slap-fighting over traditional combat sports.
“That slapping competition is very much easier than boxing and MMA because that one is straight to your face. In boxing and MMA, you can die. In power slap, you give all your neck to me, I will slap it,” he said.
He added, “I want to show all these white guys that we in Nigeria are very stubborn and strong. It’s my dream to have the belt and bring it to Nigeria.”
The fighter, who was nicknamed by Afrobeats star Davido and Shinorambo, started by watching slap competitions on TikTok before reaching out to participate.
Hulk trains his neck and shoulders extensively in the gym to prepare for both receiving and delivering powerful slaps.
Despite suffering a hand injury in his last fight when his opponent turned his head into his palm, Hulk remains determined.
His role model is Anthony Joshua. “I like the guy very well, but I just want to fight him. He’s the champion,” he said with a smile.
After winning his first international power slap bout, Hulk said, “I’m very happy. I have the determination to bring it back to Nigeria.”
