South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker smashed the long-standing women’s 200m breaststroke world record Thursday to win the Olympic gold medal, the first for her continent.
AFP reports that the 24-year-old timed 2mins 18.95sec to better the 2:19.11 set by Denmark’s Rikke Moller Pedersen in 2013. America’s Lilly King was second in 2:19.92 with her team-mate Annie Lazor third in 2:20.84.
The United States of America are nine medals ahead of China on the leader board, followed by the Russian Olympic Committee who sits third on the medals table at the Tokyo Olympic Games after the competitions on Friday.
AP reports that Australia’s Jessica Fox has made Olympic history at the Tokyo Games as the first gold medalist in women’s canoe slalom. Fox made the last run of the final and crushed it.
She beat rival and silver-medalist Mallory Franklin of Britain with a winning run through the rapids of the Kasai Canoe Slalom Center. The women’s canoe slalom is one of 18 new events introduced to the Olympics this year in a push for gender equity. Andrea Herzog of Germany took bronze.
Africa is represented by Egypt who has two medals, as well as South Africa (3) while Ivory Coast has one medal.
