A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday night at Emab Plaza, a four-storey commercial building located behind Mandilas on Taiwo Street, Lagos Island.
The blaze, which started on the fourth floor around 9 p.m., spread rapidly, sending thick smoke into the night sky and causing panic among traders and residents in nearby structures.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread quickly, threatening adjacent buildings before firefighters managed to curb its spread.
“We saw smoke pouring out suddenly, and within minutes, flames were everywhere. People were running for safety while shouting for help,” said one shop owner, Mrs. Funke Adebayo.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly to the distress call.
“Our teams arrived promptly following the alert at 19:23 hours. The fire originated on the upper floors of the building, and we are working tirelessly to contain it and prevent further damage,” said Deputy Controller-General Olajide Ogabi.
Ogabi added, “We appeal for cooperation from residents around the scene to allow rescue workers easy access. Investigations will determine the cause of the fire.”
