Maritime transport groups have announced the deployment of over 40 heavy-duty tow trucks across Lagos to swiftly remove broken-down trucks from the roads.

The groups involved include the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, the National Association of Road Transport Owners, and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria. They partnered with the National Towing Vehicle Owners Association to improve towing operations in the state.

A joint committee has been set up by the groups to create a plan and set clear guidelines for the smooth running of the project. Their goal is to ensure the partnership works effectively and is sustainable.

Speaking on the development, AMATO President, Remi Ogungbemi, said the main aim of the meeting was to strengthen their partnership and make towing operations more efficient.

He revealed that an agreement was reached with the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to allow truckers to remove their broken-down vehicles through the NTVOA’s Lagos State branch.

According to Ogungbemi, this move will make towing services easier, cut down costs for truckers, and ensure the project runs without delays.

“We decided on this arrangement because government involvement in the process has negatively impacted our business. It has become a ‘cash cow’ for them,” he said.

He added that the NTVOA has over 40 heavy-duty tow trucks ready to work at any time, ensuring quick removal of broken-down trucks without unnecessary interference.

Ogungbemi also said that as part of their plans, the groups will formally inform relevant authorities and security agencies to protect towing operations.

“This will ensure a smooth implementation of the project, free from street urchins and uniformed extortionists operating in the metropolis,” he added.

He stressed that by combining their resources and expertise, the collaboration will offer affordable, safe, and effective towing services.

Ogungbemi concluded by saying that forming the joint committee to set fair towing fees and seeking security support shows the commitment of all parties to the project’s success.

“This initiative is set to benefit truckers, towing operators, and the broader logistics system in Lagos State,” he said.
