Controversial Nollywood actor and self-proclaimed clergyman, Yul Edochie, has sparked discussion once again with claims that many Nigerian pastors secretly perform traditional rites despite publicly disassociating from such practices.
Edochie made the statement in a post shared via his verified Facebook page on Thursday, urging religious leaders to be more open about their beliefs and practices.
“Many of our pastors and priests are traditionalists,” he wrote. “Occasionally they travel to their villages and perform some traditional rites to clear their way.
“But they are hiding it from their church members because they don’t want to be called fetish.”
In the same post, Edochie, who launched his online ministry, True Salvation Ministry (TSM), in January 2024, encouraged pastors to embrace transparency and educate their congregations about African spirituality. According to him, “tradition is not juju,” and he argued that not all problems could be solved through prayer alone.
“We’re Africans. Holy Ghost doesn’t solve every problem. Some problems require traditional solutions,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Edochie also shared a personal revelation, stating that reconnecting with his ancestral faith, Igbo traditional religion (Omenaani), was one of the most fulfilling decisions he has ever made.
“I wish I started it a long time ago. I thank God for showing me the truth,” he said.
