A LagFerry vessel carrying passengers caught fire at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu on Thursday morning, leaving several people injured.

The fire broke out around 6:00 a.m., causing panic among commuters. The incident occurred as heavy traffic congestion hit Lagos due to the closure of Independence Bridge at Ahmadu Bello Way, Marina.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, ensuring that all passengers were safely evacuated. However, four people sustained minor injuries and were taken for medical treatment.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority confirmed the incident in a statement from its Public Affairs Unit.

The statement read: “Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, working closely with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and other first responders to manage the situation effectively.”

The affected ferry, Igbega Eko, was on its way to Victoria Island when the fire started. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but LASWA assured the public that an investigation is ongoing.

“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways,” the agency added.

LASWA also reassured passengers that ferry services remain safe and operational.

“We encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying our waterways. We will provide further updates as investigations progress,” the statement said.

Despite the incident, ferry operations in Lagos continue as scheduled while authorities work to improve safety measures on the waterways.
