Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as their interim head coach until the end of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month.
The club confirmed the decision on Tuesday after holding several meetings with Carrick and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United eventually chose Carrick, who is a former player and ex-coach at the club, to steady the team for the rest of the campaign.
Carrick will take charge of training immediately and his first match will be the Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford on Saturday. He will be assisted by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion and Jonny Evans, while Darren Fletcher has returned to his role with the under-18 team.
Speaking after his appointment, Carrick described the role as an honour and said his focus is on helping the players meet the standards expected at the club. He expressed confidence in the squad’s ability and said there is still a lot to fight for this season.
This is not Carrick’s first time in charge of United. He previously served as caretaker manager in 2021, overseeing two wins and a draw after Solskjaer was sacked. He later left when Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim boss and went on to manage Middlesbrough.
Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough in June 2025 after they finished 10th in the Championship, but United’s hierarchy believe his experience, knowledge of the club and hands-on coaching style make him the right choice for now.
Manchester United are currently seventh in the Premier League, three points off the top four. The club is expected to appoint a permanent head coach in the summer.
