Man United defeat Leeds in dramatic six-goal thriller at Elland Road

Published

Manchester United have defeated Leeds United 3-2 in an eventful Yorkshire derby at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

Ralf Ragnick’s men were looking to build on their 2-0 victory over Brighton and got to a good start by netting two goals in the first half.

Harry Maguire’s header from a Luke Shaw corner kick gave the visitors the lead in the 34th minute as Man Utd scored a Premier League goal from a corner for the first time since April 2021 against Burnley.

The skipper’s goal was United’s first from a corner kick after about 138 attempts.

Bruno Fernandes (45+5′) doubled the lead in stoppage time of the first half by heading home a Jadon Sancho’s beautiful cross in Leeds’ 18-yeard box as United enter the break 2-0 up.

However, the second half came with the full Yorkshire derby storm as the hosts came roaring, used the rain-soaked pitch to their advantage by scoring two goals in one minute to level matters.

Rodrigo Moreno attempted cross turned into United’s net in the 53rd minute, leaving David De Gea stunned.

Raphinha netted a dramatic equaliser in the 54th minute to send the home fans roaring as United lost their balance.

However, the Red Devils managed to weather the storm, to avoid another draw, getting two more goals through super subs, Fred (70′) and Anthony Elanga (88′).

Ragnick’s side go into the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash away to Atletico Madrid with a 4-2 victory over a stubborn Marcelo Bielsa side.

The Red Devils take a four-point lead on fourth place over West Ham and Arsenal easing the pressure off Ralf Ragnick’s side after a poor run of games before last match’s 2-0 win over Brighton.

However, United will be wary of The Gunners and fellow London side, Tottenham, who both have three outstanding games apiece, as the race for a Champions League finish gets tougher.
