Manchester United has sacked their manager, Erik ten Hag, following a disappointing start to the season, the club announced on Monday.

Ten Hag’s departure comes after United’s recent 1-0 defeat to West Ham, which left them in 14th place on the Premier League table with only three wins from nine league games.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” read the club’s official statement on Monday. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Appointed in April 2022, Ten Hag led United to two domestic trophies: the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. Last season, he also guided United to a third-place Premier League finish, securing Champions League qualification. However, the current season’s struggles have led to a change in leadership.

The club’s management, including Chief Executive Omar Berrada, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, and Technical Director Jason Wilcox, recommended his exit after reviewing the team’s poor performance. Reports reveal that United’s hierarchy had met earlier this month to discuss Ten Hag’s position following a tough start to the season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, former United striker, will temporarily lead the team, with the rest of Ten Hag’s coaching staff remaining in place.

Manchester United’s next game is scheduled against Leicester City in the League Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday, where Van Nistelrooy will step in as interim manager.
