At a German Court, on Wednesday, a 26-year-old man was charged for using sharp objects to scratch the paintwork of 642 vehicles.

A spokesman for the District Court in the town of Schweinfurt, Central Germany, said the case involved damages amounting to around 930,000 euros (or over one million dollars).

The man is accused of vandalizing cars with a sharp object in Schweinfurt and nearby towns between Feb. and April 2018.

The search for the culprit however, lasted weeks and police even resorted to setting-up a Special Commission with the name “paint scratcher.”

The suspect was arrested after a local woman heard scratching noises sometime in April 2018. Officers found the man in possession of a screw.

Prosecutors had originally accused him of scratching 1,700 vehicles and causing damages in excess of 2.3 million euros. But the court rejected those claims due to lack of evidence.

Meanwhile, each of the over 600 instances of car vandalism was pinned to the suspect.

However, the court scheduled 24 hearing days for the trial.
