A tragic incident has shocked residents of Onicha Ngwa community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State after a man reportedly set his wife and children on fire over alleged infidelity.

The suspect, 40-year-old Udochi Amala, carried out the act in the early hours of Saturday, between 1am and 2am. According to reports, he poured fuel on himself, his wife Amarachi, and their three children, and then set them ablaze.

One of the children, a one-year-old girl, died on the spot due to severe burns. The mother and two other children were rushed to the hospital but were reported to have died on Monday.

Udochi, who lives in Amapu Ihe village in Osisioma Local Government Area, tried to escape after the incident but was caught by residents and handed over to the police.

In a statement made after his arrest, Udochi said,

“I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.”

He also admitted that he never actually caught his wife with another man.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka.

“Yes, the police are aware. Investigation is ongoing,” she said.

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, Abia State branch, has condemned the incident. In a joint statement released on Tuesday by its Chairperson, Njideka Aniawonwa, and Secretary, Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, FIDA described the act as “a gross violation of human rights and dignity.”

“We are shocked, outraged, and deeply concerned by this horrific act. No one deserves such cruelty,” the statement read.

FIDA called for a full investigation and justice for the victims. The organisation also urged the public to speak up against domestic violence and child abuse.

“We must protect women and children. We encourage everyone to report such acts and support survivors,” FIDA said.

An unconfirmed report said the wife and two remaining children died late Monday while receiving treatment at a private hospital.

The case has once again raised concerns about domestic violence in Nigeria, with calls for stronger laws and better protection for victims.
