A man whose identity had not been confirmed as of press time reportedly jumped into the Lagos Lagoon after parking his car on a bridge, but was quickly rescued by local fishermen who prevented what eyewitnesses described as a potentially fatal situation.

A video of the rescue was shared on Instagram on Wednesday by Isaac Fayose, who raised concern about the development and urged Nigerians to check on their loved ones.

“Please, check on your family and friends. This just happened today. Who knows what went wrong,” he wrote.

Details surrounding what led to the incident remain unclear, while authorities are yet to issue an official statement. The Lagos State Police Command had not confirmed the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The incident adds to a recurring series of similar cases involving people jumping or attempting to jump into the Lagos Lagoon from prominent bridges such as the Third Mainland Bridge and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.

In March 2025, an unidentified woman jumped into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge near the University of Lagos waterfront; her body was later recovered and she was pronounced dead. Earlier cases include a middle-aged man who plunged into the lagoon from the bridge in 2018 and later died, and another man in 2020 who jumped into the water and could not be located during search operations.

On the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, an unidentified adult jumped into the lagoon in August 2023, triggering a marine police search and recovery operation. Similar incidents were reported around 2017 and 2022, with officers intervening to stop individuals from jumping from the same bridge.
