Man impersonating Gombe Senator bags five years jail term

Hon. Justice J. Awak of the Gombe State High Court on Monday convicted and sentenced a man to five years in jail for impersonating the lawmaker representing Gombe South Senatorial District, Bulus Amos.

The culprit, one Charles Musa, however, bagged an option of N510,000 for impersonating the lawmaker.

WuzupNigeria reports that Musa was dragged before the court on four counts bordering on cheating by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] Gombe Zonal office.

Musa was arrested in Jos, Plateau State following a petition by Senator Amos that sometime in 2019, while pretending to be the Senator, the convict called some prominent people and defrauded them by way of soliciting several amounts of money using account numbers of different banks such as Anna Lokoja 302294*** First Bank, Eunice Patrick 0022651*** Access/Diamond Bank, Daniel Bankole 6021917*** Keystone and Ofobuike George 6170371*** Fidelity.

He was said to have used different phone numbers to make the calls.

Musa, however, pleaded guilty to the charges that he induced one Professor Alhassan Gani to deliver N250,000 by falsely pretending to be Senator Amos.

The Prosecution Counsel, G. I. Ndeh Esq, urged the court to convict the defendant by way of summary trial based on his plea which the Defense Counsel, Babangida Mohammed did not object, rather pleaded to the court to temper justice with mercy.

In his Judgment, Justice Awak ordered that Musa pays the sum of N510,000 within three months from the date of sentence as restitution to the victim, failure of which he shall be sentenced to five years imprisonment.
