A man has died following a horrific suspected shark attack near Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Western Australia.

Emergency responders were called to waters near Geordie Bay at about 10am local time on Saturday, May 16, according to a spokesperson for St John Western Australia Ambulance.

Rescue teams, including paramedics, police officers and a rescue helicopter, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

WA Police said the victim was transported to shore by boat, where paramedics were waiting to provide urgent medical assistance.

“Emergency services were advised of a possible shark attack off Geordie Bay at Rottnest Island,” the spokesperson said.

Despite efforts to save him, police confirmed the man could not be revived after being brought ashore. Authorities have since launched a report for the coroner.

Surf Life Saving WA revealed that a five-metre white shark had been sighted roughly 80 metres from the shore at around 10am on Saturday morning.

Rottnest Island, located off the city of Perth, is widely known for its scenic beaches, crystal-clear waters and native quokka population. The island remains one of Western Australia’s most visited tourist attractions and is also a protected nature reserve.

A spokesperson for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development stated that the agency is working closely with local authorities and more information will be provided shortly.

The fatal incident comes months after a string of shark attacks reported earlier this year around Sydney and other parts of New South Wales.

Among those incidents was the death of 12-year-old Nico Antic, who was fatally attacked by a shark while swimming with friends at a Sydney beach in January. The tragedy was the first in a series of shark-related encounters recorded across New South Wales this year.
