Manchester City kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a commanding 3-0 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, reducing Arsenal’s lead at the top to just two points.
After a frustrating first half that ended goalless, the home side exploded into life after the break. Belgian winger Jeremy Doku broke the deadlock on the hour mark with a beautiful curling finish into the far corner.
“That goal changed everything for us,” a City source said after the match. “We were nervous in the first half, but Doku showed his quality when it mattered most.”
Erling Haaland then scrambled home a second goal with 15 minutes remaining, sending the home fans into celebration. Substitute Omar Marmoush added a third in the second minute of stoppage time, calmly finishing after being set up by Haaland.
City manager Pep Guardiola admitted his team struggled to break down a stubborn Brentford side in the opening period. “Scoring goals isn’t to be a genius, it’s to bring players close to Haaland,” Guardiola said. “In the second half, we did that much better.”
Brentford, chasing a European spot, remain eighth in the table after winning only one of their last eight league matches. Despite the defeat, Brentford assistant coach praised the team’s effort. “We showed nothing but bravery,” he said. “But against a side like City, small mistakes get punished.”
The visitors had their moments. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma pushed away a dangerous free‑kick from Mathias Jensen in the first half and later had to react sharply to deny Igor Thiago at the near post. Brentford also saw a goalbound effort cleared off the line after Donnarumma failed to handle a long throw.
There was controversy in the first half when City captain Bernardo Silva received only a yellow card for lashing out at Brentford’s Nathan Collins. The decision was checked and approved by VAR, much to the anger of the visiting fans. Two further VAR reviews of possible fouls by Matheus Nunes on Kevin Schade also went against Brentford.
City have now gone 16 league games unbeaten at home, with their only loss at the Etihad this season coming against Tottenham back in August. Their goal difference stands at +40, just one behind Arsenal’s, which could prove crucial in the title race.
To keep pressure on the leaders, City must win their remaining two league games against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. Arsenal can restore their five‑point lead on Sunday when they face relegation‑threatened West Ham.
Brentford, meanwhile, will look to bounce back in their final two matches against Crystal Palace and Liverpool as they try to keep their European dreams alive.
