The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Jigawa State has arrested a 38-year-old man, Basiru Yushe’u, for allegedly stealing iron wires from a bridge in Bakin Gada, Auyo Local Government Area.
NSCDC spokesperson in the state, Badruddeen Tijjani, said in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was caught on Friday, July 18, after a distress call from residents.
He said Yushe’u was arrested while trying to sell the stolen iron at a scrap market.
“This shows the effectiveness of the Corps’ surveillance and response mechanism,” Tijjani stated.
The suspect reportedly confessed during questioning. He said he was fishing when he saw the bridge cable, used a hand saw to cut it, and later took it to hide before heading to the scrap market.
The statement added, “The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.”
The NSCDC described the act as a threat to public safety and warned others to stay away from vandalism.
Jigawa State Commandant, Bala Bodinga, praised the officers involved in the arrest and urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity.
He said, “Vandalism is a serious crime that can have far-reaching consequences for the economy and public safety.”
