A man, Sunday Echeji, has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu for allegedly cutting off his wife’s hand in a shocking case of domestic violence.

Echeji was brought before the court on Friday, January 31, 2025, and charged with attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024.

The attack, which happened in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, caused widespread outrage in the state.

Due to the serious nature of the crime, the Chief Magistrate transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution, stating that the court lacked jurisdiction to handle it.

Echeji has been remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre until his trial at the state High Court.

The First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, issued a statement on Saturday, condemning the attack and reaffirming the state’s commitment to ending violence against women.

“This kind of violence will not be tolerated in our state. Rest assured, we will ensure that justice is served,” she said.

“So, think twice before you ever think of committing such a barbaric or inhumane act or indeed any form of violence because, with this administration, you must face justice.”

The Enugu State Government has been working to protect women and girls, strengthen legal protections, and support victims of domestic violence.

Civil society groups, law enforcement agencies, and government officials are collaborating to ensure that cases like this set a strong example against all forms of violence.
