Makinde okays Oyo disability commission

Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has given his approval for the constitution of the Oyo State Disability Commission and the domestication of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria (Prohibition) Act.

This was communicated by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barrister Adekanbi during a public lecture organised by the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Oyo State chapter.

“The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde has given his consent for the establishment of the Oyo State Disability Commission (OYSDICOM). The bill will be sent to the State Assembly for its adaptation and domestication and should be operational by February 2021”.

Adekanbi noted that although the commission is not captured in the 2021 budget, the government has made a promise to make grants available to the commission when established.

Earlier in the program, the Guest lecturer, Dr Bukola Akinbola of the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan had lamented the delay in domesticating the act across the country and establishment of the commission.

The call was also echoed by the chairman of the association in the state, Comrade Lekan Bello who said the Governor had promised to ensure the enactment and implementation of the act before the expiration of his second year in office.

“The governor has promised to ensure the act is domesticated in the state and the commission established before the expiration of his second year in office. We believe he will live up to his promises on this as he has done on every of his electoral promises,” Bello said.

Some notable individuals were awarded at the event among whom was the Executive Assistant to the Governor, Barrister Adekanbi, public analysts, Dr Ademiluyi and Dr Adebiyi of the FCE (Special) Oyo.
