Majority of Americans doubt Biden’s ability for second term due to age, poll reveals

Most Americans believe President Joe Biden’s age might hinder his effectiveness if he were to seek a second term, as indicated by a recent poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC.

According to the poll results released on Monday, 28th August 2023, a staggering 77% of Americans across the political spectrum feel that Biden, at his current age, may not be able to effectively fulfill the duties of the presidency for another four years.

This sentiment is reflected by 89% of Republicans, which is to be expected. However, the surprising revelation is that 69% of Democrats also share concerns about Biden’s age impacting his potential for a second term.

The poll carried out from 10th August to 14th, utilized a sample drawn from the NORC’s AmeriSpeak Panel, designed to provide a representative cross-section of the U.S. population. The margin of error for all respondents is reported to be plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Interestingly, the poll also contrasted this sentiment with former President Donald Trump’s age. Despite being only three years younger than Biden, fewer than half of Americans surveyed believe Trump is too old to hold public office.

The poll’s implications extend beyond evaluating individual leaders’ ages. A significant finding is the increasing support among American voters for instituting age-related restrictions on public offices.

Approximately two-thirds of respondents approved implementing age limits on the presidency, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
