The president of Spain’s football federation, Luis Rubiales, has been suspended by FIFA for 90 days for kissing a female player on the lips. FIFA said that Rubiales violated its code of ethics and banned him from all football-related activities at national and international levels.
Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso, a member of Spain’s women’s World Cup team, after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final. The incident was captured on camera and sparked outrage on social media.
FIFA said in a statement that it had decided to provisionally suspend Rubiales “following a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident.” It added that its disciplinary committee would conduct further proceedings and decide on possible sanctions.
