The Labour Party has announced that Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate, will not be considered for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.
This declaration was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday. “We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi stated. He emphasized that the surge in support the party received during the last election was not solely due to Obi’s influence, attributing much of the momentum to the EndSARS movement and public dissatisfaction with the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Arabambi further alleged that LP’s acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu were working in collaboration with Obi. He indicated that the party would initiate disciplinary measures to remove them. Additionally, he challenged Obi to officially declare his exit from the Labour Party.
“Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC. If he believes he has the proficiency on his own to have seven million votes in 2027, we advise him to pronounce his departure from Labour Party,” Arabambi asserted.
Although Peter Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential race, has expressed support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he has not formally defected to the coalition.
