The Christian Association of Nigeria has expressed disappointment with the Federal Government for failing to complete the 200-kilometre Lokoja-Abuja highway.

CAN’s President, Dr Samson Ayokunle, commented on the delayed project at the official inauguration of the Government House Chapel for Christian worshippers built by the Alhaji Yahaya Bello-led administration in Kogi State.

Speaking in Lokoja on Monday, Dr Ayokunle, said the government’s inability to complete the highway after 15 years is a “national shame”.

“Lokoja-Abuja highway is a shame of the country. Do something and remove this shame; 15 years constructing a 200kms road is a shame,” he said.

The Abuja-Lokaoja project began under the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2006 at the cost of N11.2billion, according to the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mr Abubakar Aliyu.

Aliyu, quoted by the Guardian on June 20, 2020, stated that the administration of his principal, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) took over the project in 2015.

He added that Buhari mandated that all pending projects must be finished since the government was a continuum.

Aliyu stated that the construction had reached over 95 per cent completion with the cost increasing to N29billion as a result of the time value of money.

“This project for which we are here today is an 84km road contract, 42km on the two carriageway each.

“It was reviewed in 2018 and the cost increased based on the time value of money to N29billion, so work has been going on and has reached over 95 per cent completion.
