A football match between Vitoria and Bahia in Brazil was abandoned after one of the teams was reduced to six players with the seventh red card.

The two clubs hail from near to Salvador and any fixture between the pair is considered a local derby and labelled ‘Ba-Vi’ of peace to promote a peaceful climate on and off the field. Last weekend encounter however ended in disgrace.

Vitoria bagged five red cards and Bahia two reds before the final whistle ending the match, according to FIFA rules. Two Bahia players were also sent off from the substitutes bench, making a total of nine players given their marching orders.

A melee had broken out after Vitoria took offence at the dance celebration of Bahia players after Vinicius equalised from the penalty spot in the 50th minute to keep the game at 1-1.

The referee handed out red cards to seven players involved in the brawl, and a further two later on, before eventually calling an end to the tie due to FIFA rules which states:

“Although a match may not start if either team consists of fewer than seven players, the minimum number of players in a team required for a match to continue is left to the discretion of member associations.

“However, it is the opinion of the International FA Board that a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team.
“If a team has fewer than seven players because one or more players has deliberately left the field of play, the referee is not obliged to stop the match and the advantage may be played.

“In such cases, the referee must not allow the match to resume after the ball has gone out of play if a team does not have the minimum number of seven players.”

Bahia have been retrospectively awarded a 3-0 victory.
