Roma and Liverpool, two of the biggest clubs in European football, suffered shock defeats in the UEFA Europa League group stage on Thursday night.

Liverpool were expected to win their match against Toulouse, but they were caught out by the French side.

Toulouse took the lead in the 22nd minute through Aron Donnum, and then doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute through Thijs Dallinga.

Liverpool pulled a goal back through a bizarre own goal in the 65th minute, but Frank Magri restored Toulouse’s two-goal lead in the 67th minute.

Diogo Jota pulled a goal back for Liverpool in the 89th minute, and they thought they had levelled the score when Jarell Quansah scored in the seventh added minute.

However, a VAR review ruled out the goal for handball, and Liverpool were left to rue their missed chances.

Liverpool are still top of Europa League Group E, on nine points, but Toulouse are just two behind in second place and have a three-point cushion over third-placed Union Saint-Gilloise, who lost to LASK.

Roma were also beaten 2-0 by Slavia Prague in Czech Republic, while Liverpool lost 3-2 to Toulouse in France.

Roma were the favorites to win the match against Slavia, but they were put on the back foot from the start.

The Czech side took the lead in the 50th minute through Vaclav Jurecka, and then doubled their advantage through Mojmir Chytil in the 74th minute.
