Liverpool hold Man City 2-2 as title race toughens

Published

The 2021/22 Premier League title race will go down the wire after Liverpool held defending champions, Manchester City, to a 2-2 draw in a classic encounter.

Jurgen Klopp’s side came into the game trailing the league leaders by one point and a victory at the Etihad Stadium will fire The Reds above the Citizens.

However, Klopp’s plans crumbled after just five minutes into the game when Kevin De’Bruyne gave Pep Guardiola’s men the lead.

But the lead didn’t last longer than eight minutes as Diogo Jota equalised, sending Guardiola’s side a warning that Klopp’s men were up to the task.

City regained their lead a few minutes before the break when Gabriel Jesus beat the offside trap and Alisson Becker with a brilliant finish (36′) to leave the visitors trailing after the first half for the first time this season.

Unwilling to succumb to City’s pressure, Liverpool regrouped in the second half and levelled up through Sadio Mané after just one minute.

Raheem Sterling thought he scored the winner against his former side with 25 minutes to go but his goal was cancelled for offside by the VAR.

The fans of both sides witnessed a back and forth exchange afterwards with chances worthy of nicking the winner but both sides failed to grab the opportunity.

Liverpool trail City by one point after 30 matches with about eight matches till the end of the 2021/22 football season.

Stats via Google:

Both Premier League games between Man City and Liverpool this season have ended as draws, the first time they’ve shared a draw in both league meetings in a season since 2012-13.

Liverpool are now winless in five Premier League matches against Manchester City (D3 L2), their joint-longest run without a victory against them along with a five-game run between November 2011 and December 2013.

This game was the first time Manchester City had scored first and not gone on to win in the Premier League this season; they had won all 22 games when scoring first before today.
