Liverpool fall 2-1 to Union SG in Europa league
Jurgen Klopp’s experiment with youthful Liverpool squad ended in a loss in Belgium against Union Saint-Gilloise
Despite Jarell Quansah’s impressive first-half equalizer, Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat, concluding their UEFA Europa League Group E campaign.
Having already secured top spot and a place in the last 16, Klopp named the youngest-ever European starting XI in the club’s history.
Union SG took the lead on 30 minutes through Mohammed Amoura, capitalizing on a high line to round Caoimhin Kelleher.
Quansah’s powerful shot from a right-wing corner brought Liverpool level on 40 minutes. However, Union SG regained their lead before halftime as Cameron Puertas scored with a low snap-shot.
Despite Union SG having another goal disallowed in the second half, Liverpool struggled to threaten in the final third. This defeat marks Liverpool’s third loss in their last 35 matches across all competitions.
With 12 points, Liverpool tops Group E, while Toulouse secures second place, heading to the UEFA Europa League play-offs. Union SG finishes third and will enter the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs, while LASK concludes at the bottom.
Liverpool now shift their focus to Sunday’s clash with Manchester United at Anfield, likely welcoming back their key players.
