Liverpool have been crowned 2024/25 English Premier League champions after a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds have now won their first league title since 2020 and only their second in 35 years. This victory also means Liverpool have equaled Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles.

Unlike five years ago, when Covid-19 restrictions kept fans away from the celebrations, Anfield was packed with over 60,000 fans who created an electric atmosphere. Before the game, tens of thousands of supporters gathered outside the stadium, lighting flares and waving flags that read “Liverpool 20-time Champions.”

The game started with excitement and nerves. Tottenham scored first when Dominic Solanke headed home from a James Maddison corner in the 12th minute, but Liverpool quickly answered. Luis Diaz tapped in a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai four minutes later, and though the offside flag went up, VAR awarded the goal.

The Reds kept the pressure on. Alexis Mac Allister fired Liverpool into the lead with a powerful shot from outside the box in the 24th minute. Cody Gakpo made it 3-1 before half-time, smashing the ball into the bottom corner after Tottenham failed to clear their lines.

In the second half, top scorer Mohamed Salah added another goal. After collecting a pass from Szoboszlai, Salah cut inside and blasted the ball into the bottom corner. In a joyful moment, he celebrated by taking a selfie with a fan’s phone in front of the famous Kop stand.

Loud chants of “We’re going to win the league” filled the stadium as the party continued. Liverpool’s fifth goal came when Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie accidentally poked the ball into his own net.

As the final whistle blew, the club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” rang out once again, with fans singing and waving scarves in celebration.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker and manager Arne Slot were seen embracing on the pitch as the players celebrated the historic win.

Liverpool are now on 82 points, 15 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, with only four matches left to play. Arsenal, despite being strong challengers, could not keep up with Liverpool’s consistency.

Tottenham, meanwhile, remain 16th in the table after their 19th defeat of the season, putting more pressure on their manager Ange Postecoglou.

This season had started with Manchester City as favourites, aiming for a fifth straight title, but their form dropped. Arsenal tried to take advantage but drew too many games, while Liverpool stayed strong under their new manager.

Liverpool’s future also looks bright. Both Salah and Van Dijk have signed new two-year contracts, though reports suggest Trent Alexander-Arnold could be heading to Real Madrid.
