Defending Premier League champions, Liverpool, defeated Southampton 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday night to keep their top-four hopes alive as they aim for Champions League qualification.

The victory saw Jurgen Klopp’s side leapfrog Tottenham who lost 3-1 to Leeds United to fifth on the Premier League table.

Sadio Mane scored Liverpool’s first in the 31st minute as he out-leapt Kyle Walker-Peters to net a close-range header from a Mo Salah’s cross.

Thiago Alcantara sealed the win with his first Reds goal in the 90th minute.

“I always try to bring out the reality,” Alcantara told Sky Sports. “We are for sure not happy with the situation we are in now but for the mood, for the confidence in the next game … we are very happy with the win. It’s always a great moment when you score but we have to keep fighting to the end to have this small chance [to finish in the top four].”

Speaking about his first goal, the Spaniard said, “As I say, it’s an amazing feeling but the most important thing is we keep fighting for this small miracle that we can have.”

Liverpool are now six points behind Leicester City who slipped after a shocking 4-2 loss to Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium on Friday.

Klopp’s side have one game at hand against Manchester United before facing West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace for their last matches
