Richie began his music career in 1968, as a member of the Commodores. The Commodores became established as a popular soul group; their first several albums had a danceable and funky sound.

Over time, Richie began to write and sing more romantic, easy-listening ballads. Richie launched a solo career in 1982.

His 1982 debut solo album, Lionel Richie, contained three hit singles; Truly, You Are and My Love.
