A 14-year-old girl has been killed by a lion on a ranch just outside Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 19, 2025, near the southern side of the Nairobi National Park.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the lion attacked the girl while she was in the area with another teenager. The other girl witnessed the attack and quickly raised the alarm.

KWS said in a statement on Sunday, “KWS rangers and response teams were swiftly mobilized and traced bloodstains leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl’s body was recovered with injuries on the lower back. The lion was not sighted at the scene.”

Efforts are ongoing to find the lion responsible for the attack. A trap has been set, and KWS teams are searching the area to ensure the safety of nearby residents.

This tragic incident comes just one day after another wildlife attack in Kenya. A 54-year-old man was reportedly killed by an elephant in Nyeri County on Friday.

KWS has extended its condolences to the families affected by both incidents. “KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas,” the agency said.

The wildlife agency also called for better ways to reduce clashes between humans and wild animals. It said more investment is needed in early warning systems and stronger partnerships with local communities to prevent such tragedies.

The attacks have once again raised concerns about the dangers faced by people living close to wildlife zones in Kenya.
