Lewandowski Gerd Muller Bundesliga goal record

Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski, has broken the Bundesliga all-time goal record held by the legendary Gerd Muller.

Lewandowski scored his 41st goal of the season in the 5-2 win over Ausburg to surpass Müller’s #Bundesliga record from the 1971-72 season (40 goals).

Lewandowski has now netted 53 goals in 46 games becoming the first Bundesliga player to reach the record for the first time after Muller’s 40-goal record 49-years ago.

“Lewandowski will certainly want to extend his record. It is our duty to take him out of the game as good as possible in order to protect Gerd Mueller’s goal record,” Augsburg’s coach, Markus Weinzierl said before the match.

“Gerd Mueller was an idol in my youth and he was my assistant coach at Bayern Munich’s reserves. I know him well and appreciate him a lot. That’s why I will wish for the record to remain a shared one.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s own goal and Serge Gnabry’s header gave Bayern the lead before Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman ensured the German champions went 4-0 up before the break.
