A Lagos Waste Management Authority official has died after a minibus crashed into a parked LAWMA truck in the Ketu area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, saying the accident happened around 11:59 pm on Monday night.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the crash was caused by reckless driving by the minibus driver and carelessness on the part of the parked LAWMA truck.
“Preliminary investigations at the scene indicated that the accident resulted from reckless driving on the part of the minibus driver and carelessness on the part of the parked LAWMA truck. The truck driver failed to indicate its parked status with a C-Caution sign at the required position and appropriate distance, leading to the collision,” he said.
During the accident, the minibus hit a LAWMA official who was carrying out his duty. Sadly, he did not survive.
“Unfortunately, the LAWMA official succumbed to his injuries before the arrival of the Agency’s Response Teams,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The minibus driver was seriously injured and received medical treatment from paramedics at the scene.
Both vehicles were damaged in the crash. While the LAWMA truck had minor damage at the back, the minibus was badly damaged in the front.
LASEMA said safety measures were put in place to prevent more accidents during the recovery operation.
“The deceased LAWMA official was recovered and bagged by the Agency’s Response Team. His remains were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for further processing,” the statement added.
The LAWMA truck was moved to Ketu Police Station, while the road was cleared to allow free movement of vehicles.
LASEMA confirmed that the recovery operation had been completed.
