The Lagos Waste Management Authority has announced plans to procure compactor trucks and lease them to Private Sector Participation operators in a bid to enhance waste management efficiency and maintain a cleaner Lagos.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to supporting PSP operators by equipping them to perform their duties more effectively.

He noted that the state government provides monthly subsidies to assist their operations.

According to him, the growing population of Lagos demands a more efficient waste management system, but current economic challenges have made operations difficult for many PSP operators.

“Unfortunately, because of the economic situation, volatility in the foreign exchange market and increasing cost of diesel, a lot of the PSP operators are struggling.

“We are developing an intervention programme where we are going to bring in trucks and make them available to them on a lease basis,” Gbadegesin said.

He explained that the initiative is aimed at addressing service delivery gaps and ensuring more effective waste disposal across the state.

LAWMA, in collaboration with 428 PSP operators, currently evacuates waste across 40 routes, with trucks making two to three trips daily to sustain cleanliness in Lagos.

Gbadegesin urged residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing that maintaining a sustainable environment requires collective effort.
