The Lagos Waste Management Authority has announced plans to tackle the environmental impact of the 1,040 tonnes of textile waste generated daily in the state.

Speaking in Lagos on Monday to mark International Zero Waste Day, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the agency’s commitment to reducing textile waste in line with this year’s theme, “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles.”

Gbadegesin revealed that textile waste accounts for approximately 8% of the 13,000 tonnes of waste generated in Lagos daily.

As part of its waste reduction strategy, LAWMA intends to ban textile waste from all landfills and will collaborate with Tejuosho Market in Yaba to collect textile waste for recycling.

He also noted that students at the LAWMA Academy are being trained to upcycle textile waste into useful products, promoting sustainability and economic empowerment.

Reiterating LAWMA’s commitment to achieving zero waste, Gbadegesin called on Lagos residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.

“The International Zero Waste Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to protect the environment.

“At LAWMA, we are committed to policies and programmes that support zero waste, including waste sorting, recycling, and waste-to-energy initiatives. However, for these efforts to succeed, every Lagosian must take ownership of proper waste disposal,” he stated.
