The Lagos Waste Management Authority has issued a stern warning to property owners and residents engaging in illegal recycling and scavenging in unauthorized locations, stating that violators risk legal sanctions, including the revocation of property rights.

In a statement on Sunday, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, expressed concern over the growing trend of indiscriminate waste sorting, dumping, and trading of recyclables in public spaces and private properties.

He noted that such activities not only degrade the city’s aesthetics but also pose significant environmental hazards.

“LAWMA has observed a rising trend of indiscriminate waste sorting, dumping, and trading of recyclables in unauthorized locations. These activities violate the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

To enforce compliance, LAWMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, recently dislodged squatters and illegal recyclers at Ijora-Olopa underbridge as part of efforts to sanitize the area.

The agency emphasized that only registered waste collectors and licensed recycling facilities should be patronized.

Gbadegesin urged residents to support the state government’s goal of a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos, warning that further violations would attract strict enforcement measures.

“We cannot fold our hands and watch a few people derail the ongoing efforts to make the environment cleaner and livable for all residents. Any property owner who permits unauthorized recycling or scavenging activities on their premises risks revocation of property rights and other legal consequences,” he stated.

LAWMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining a well-managed waste disposal system but stressed that residents’ cooperation is crucial in achieving a healthier and more environmentally friendly Lagos.
