Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Poland in an international friendly played at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
The three-time African champions entered the encounter in high spirits following a successful Unity Cup campaign, where they overcame Zimbabwe in the semifinal before defeating Jamaica in the final to retain the title.
Despite showing resilience for most of the match, Eric Chelle’s men were unable to hold on for victory as Poland scored a late equalizer to earn a share of the spoils.
The match also marked a significant milestone for Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene, who made his senior debut for Nigeria. In goal, Maduka Okoye returned to the starting lineup, getting the nod ahead of Arthur Okonkwo.
Nigeria opened the scoring midway through the first half through Terem Moffi, who completed a flowing attacking move by converting a low delivery from Moses Simon. Although the assistant referee initially flagged for offside, a VAR review overturned the decision and awarded the goal, putting the visitors 1-0 ahead.
Poland responded positively and eventually drew level shortly before halftime. Kacper Potulski capitalized on a defensive lapse after Nigeria failed to clear a corner effectively, firing home to make it 1-1 before the interval.
The Super Eagles restored their advantage in the second half when the referee pointed to the spot following a VAR review for handball inside the penalty area. Paul Onuachu took responsibility and confidently dispatched the penalty to put Nigeria back in front.
However, Poland had the final say in the contest. Deep into the closing stages, Przemyslaw Wisniewski produced a stunning long-range effort that beat Okoye and found the back of the net, securing a dramatic equalizer and ensuring the friendly ended in a 2-2 draw.
