A major fire disaster was averted on Tuesday after a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit, overturned and spilled its content along the Oshodi-Gbagada Expressway in Lagos.

The incident, which occurred opposite TREM Church, could have led to a severe explosion if not for the swift intervention of emergency responders.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in a statement by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that its operatives immediately secured the accident scene, preventing unauthorized individuals from scooping fuel and ensuring public safety.

Upon receiving the alert, LASTMA swiftly contacted the Lagos State Fire Service, whose emergency teams arrived to neutralize the spill and prevent a possible ignition.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the quick response of officers, emphasizing that their prompt action helped avert a disaster.

“Our personnel ensured a total lockdown of the area, preventing any attempt at fuel scooping and eliminating the risk of an explosion. This proactive approach was crucial in avoiding what could have been a catastrophic incident,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He urged motorists and the public to report road-related emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free hotline for immediate intervention.

Bakare-Oki further advised drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic and emergency officials’ directives to prevent avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.
