A Nigerian doctor has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the late doctors — Idowu Ahmad, Felix Ali and Abel Sunday Udo — who were reported to have died from Lassa fever.
The Nigerian doctor, identified as Dr Chioma, (@Deekachy_md on Twitter) wrote a lengthy post in which she noted that the Irrua Isolation Centre at the Institute of Lassa Fever, Research and Control in Edo State is full.
She also noted that the government has refused to support the families of the Doctors, nurses and other health workers who have died since the beginning of the Lassa fever pandemic in Nigeria. She said that some of the health workers already infected were abandoned and made to source funds to treat themselves.
She said in the light of the experience she has had working closely with the patients and medics involved, she has resorted to taking huge caution herself.
“As directed in the new Hippocratic pledge… I will make sure I’m in optimum health for the benefit of my patients, and my family too. I will work, but I will not come and go and kill myself. Be like Chioma. RIP Dr Ahmed, Ali, Udo. Sorry your country failed you,” she wrote.
