The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning against illegal shoreline extensions and unauthorised developments on Banana Island, vowing strict enforcement of building regulations to preserve the integrity of the upscale estate.

During a stakeholders’ engagement at the Lagos State Building Control Agency headquarters, officials reiterated the government’s zero tolerance for infractions.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Babatunde Abiodun, stressed that all property owners on Banana Island must obtain valid building approvals.

He decried the proliferation of illegal extensions within the estate, warning that the government would no longer overlook such violations.

“To address this issue, property owners along the shoreline have been given two weeks to submit all relevant documents for verification,” Abiodun stated.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Nurudeen Sodeinde, condemned alleged instances where government officials faced resistance during routine inspections.

“It is completely unacceptable for anyone to prevent government officials from carrying out their lawful duties. Development control is in the best interest of all residents, and we will not be deterred by resistance,” he said.

The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, announced that enforcement action would commence against structures encroaching on high-tension powerline setbacks.

“These buildings pose serious risks to lives and violate safety regulations. Once the ultimatum expires, we will begin removal operations immediately,” Oki declared.
