Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Task Force on Monday arrested 17 individuals for alleged street begging across various parts of the city, including eight minors.
The operation, which took place on December 16, 2024, was part of ongoing efforts to curb public nuisance and ensure orderliness in the metropolis.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrests in a statement shared on social media.
He explained that the special operation targeted individuals causing disruptions by begging on the streets, particularly in traffic congestion areas.
The task force patrolled key locations, including Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, and Burdillon streets in Ikoyi, as well as the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Victoria Island.
Wahab added that the arrested individuals would be transferred to appropriate government facilities for further action in line with existing laws.
In a statement posted on X formerly Twitter, Wahab said, “The Lagos State Environmental Task Force on Monday, 16th December 2024, monitored and carried out a special operation against individuals constituting public nuisance across the metropolis.
A total of 17 persons, including eight minors, involved in unlawful street begging during traffic hold-ups, were apprehended during the operation.”
