Woman arraigned for forgery, fraud in airline ticket scam

 

A 41-year-old woman identified as Adenike Salami, appeared before the Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court in Lagos State on Friday, facing charges of forging an airline ticket and fraudulently obtaining $2,500.

According to the PUNCH, Salami was arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, fraud, and forgery, brought against her by the police.

The prosecution informed the court that Salami, along with unidentified accomplices, conspired to commit the alleged crimes.

According to the prosecutor, the incident occurred on June 27, 2024, at around 7:20 PM at No. 26, Olomowewe Street, Mushin, Lagos. Salami is accused of forging a Taag-Linhas Airline ticket without authorization and using the counterfeit document to deceive and defraud the victim, Catherine Mbaku, of $2,500, approximately N4.5 million.

“The defendant knowingly induced the complainant, Catherine Mbaku, to part with $2,500 by falsely promising to procure an airline ticket, which was forged,” the prosecutor stated.

Salami pleaded not guilty to all charges. The offences are in violation of Sections 406 and 411 and are punishable under Sections 370(1)(2) and 314(1)(a)(b)(2)(3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate Waliu Salami granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like amount. The magistrate stipulated that the sureties must provide evidence of livelihood, proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and have their addresses verified.

The case has been adjourned until September 20, 2024, for further mention.
