The Lagos Waste Management Authority has urged residents to properly bag and dispose of their waste through assigned Private Sector Participation operators, warning against dumping refuse on road medians and other unauthorized locations.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, in a statement on Saturday, emphasized the need for responsible waste disposal, assuring that the agency would provide backup services in areas where PSP operators experience service gaps.
“I want to implore residents to shun the act of improper waste disposal at unauthorized locations such as road medians, canals, and uncompleted buildings. We want to assure Lagosians that we will be providing backup services in places where they are needed, to ensure proper sanitation in every part of the city,” he stated.
With the upcoming Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, Gbadegesin assured residents that the government had put adequate measures in place to maintain cleanliness across the city.
“As we mark this year’s Eid-El-Fitr, it is important that we do so in an environment-friendly manner. For this reason, we have put adequate measures in place to ensure that cleanliness is maintained across the metropolis during and after this period,” he said.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to tackling indiscriminate waste disposal, which has contributed to environmental degradation.
He also appealed to residents to patronize only licensed PSP operators and avoid using illegal garbage cart pushers, whose activities undermine the agency’s sanitation efforts.
Gbadegesin further disclosed that PSP operators would be working throughout the celebration, regardless of their usual service schedules, to ensure uninterrupted waste collection.
He added that trash bags would be distributed through waste collectors to encourage residents to bag their refuse properly.
