A truck driver has been arrested after his motorboy was crushed to death while trying to stop a moving truck at Ogolonto in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The incident happened on Wednesday night and was confirmed in a statement on Thursday by Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

Taofiq explained that officers on LASTMA’s night patrol team arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and found that the truck had suffered a brake failure.

He said, “In a distressing and avoidable tragedy that unfolded late last night, November 12, 2025, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Special Night Gang Patrol Team apprehended the driver of a heavily loaded truck after he fatally crushed his motor boy to death at Ogolonto Traffic Light Intersection, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.”

According to him, the motorboy had jumped down from the moving truck to place a wooden plank under the tyres in an attempt to control the speed. In the process, he slipped and fell under the rear tyres, which ran over him and killed him on the spot.

Taofiq added, “Preliminary findings from the joint security investigation revealed that the deceased motor boy had alighted from the moving loaded truck to assist the driver in stabilising the truck by placing a wooden plank beneath its tyres, as the braking mechanism of the vehicle was reportedly defective.”

He said LASTMA officers quickly secured the area to prevent more accidents before contacting the Ipakodo Police Division, which took over the case.

The driver was later handed to the police for further investigation. The motorboy’s body was taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed sadness and sent condolences to the family of the deceased. He warned drivers against ignoring vehicle faults.

Taofiq added, “He emphasised that mechanical negligence and poor vehicle maintenance pose severe risks not only to the operators themselves but also to the lives of innocent road users.”

Similar incidents have occurred in recent weeks. Earlier on Monday that a cement truck crushed a child to death and injured three others along the Ilaro–Ibese Expressway in Ogun State. Another crash on October 4 also killed five people when a truck rammed into a tricycle in Yewa South, Ogun State.
