Lagos to demolish over 100 shanties at Adeniji Adele

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish over 100 shanties located at Adeniji Adele underbridge starting from tomorrow, Monday, May 6, 2024.

According to reports this decision follows the expiry of a 48-hour removal notice issued to all occupants of the shanties, instructing them to vacate the premises along with their belongings.

The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab,revealed this development in an interview with journalists on Sunday.

Wahab stated that the operation would be carried out by operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and officials from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) department of the ministry, with adequate security backup.

“This action is part of our administration’s commitment to reclaiming all ungoverned spaces across Lagos,” Wahab emphasized.

He continued, “The presence of unsightly shanties in the heart of Lagos Island portrays a negative image of our city. Aside from the unsanitary conditions within these shanties, they also serve as hideouts for criminals and hubs for drug peddling, posing a threat to law-abiding residents.”

Wahab urged the occupants of the shanties to voluntarily vacate the area before the commencement of the enforcement operations on Monday for their own safety and well-being.

Last Wednesday, the state government confirmed the arrest of 11 more people in connection with the illegal habitation of squatters under a bridge towards Dolphin Estate in the Ikoyi area of the state.
