The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS route) for emergency repairs.
The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said in a statement on Sunday that the repairs will begin on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and will last until Monday, May 26, 2025.
During the repairs, the section of the road from the National Open University of Nigeria through Bonny Camp Bridge down to Independence Bridge will be closed to vehicles.
Osiyemi explained that the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane (inbound Independence Bridge) will also be unavailable. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open for motorists.
To ease movement, he advised motorists to follow these alternative routes:
- For those going to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way: Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, then proceed through Akin Adesola Street to Falomo Roundabout, and connect to Obafemi Awolowo Road to reach Ring Road.
- For motorists heading to 3rd Mainland Bridge from Ahmadu Bello Way: Follow Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, turn into Akin Adesola Street, then connect to Alfred Rewane Road, and continue through Osborne Road to join Ring Road.
- For those going to Inner Marina and CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way: Divert to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, proceed via Akin Adesola Street to Falomo Roundabout, then follow Obafemi Awolowo Road to J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.
Osiyemi assured Lagosians that LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) will manage traffic flow throughout the repair period.
