The Lagos State Government has unveiled ambitious plans to acquire a minimum of 2,000 vehicles, focusing on bolstering its state-run public transport system, particularly the Bus Rapid Transit system.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared this development in a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday.
Osiyemi addressed the chronic issue of long queues at BRT stations across the state, primarily attributed to a shortage of buses. He emphasized that the initiative’s primary goal is to alleviate these queues and enhance overall commuting experiences for Lagos residents.
“We’re aware of the long queues in all our stations, especially on Mondays. We’re working better to serve the good people of Lagos State. We’re almost done with the procurement of 2,000 BRT buses to ease the queues in the stations,” stated Osiyemi.
Highlighting the state’s commitment to public-private partnerships, Osiyemi revealed a significant boost to the initiative. An oil company has pledged to contribute to the effort by donating 50 electric buses to the BRT fleet. This generous donation is expected to further enhance transportation services and alleviate congestion in the bustling city.
“So, residents of Lagos State will no longer have to suffer the long queues,” assured Osiyemi, expressing the government’s dedication to improving the public transportation system and ensuring a smoother commuting experience for all.
