Several supermarkets in Lagos are under scrutiny following allegations of selling expired food products masked as promotional items, prompting rising concerns about consumer health and safety.
Shoppers have reported being lured by attractive discounts, only to later realise that the items had passed their expiry dates, in some cases by weeks.
Many consumers expressed frustration over being misled, calling for immediate regulatory intervention.
In one incident, Daniel Olanrewaju recounted purchasing a bottle of ketchup from a promotional shelf in Ikeja. He said the product appeared fine until his child refused to eat it, citing a foul taste. Upon closer inspection, Olanrewaju discovered that the ketchup had expired three weeks prior to the date of purchase.
Regulatory agencies such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency have come under fire for what many see as negligence. Critics argue that both agencies have failed to adequately monitor retail outlets and enforce safety standards.
As public outcry grows, calls are mounting for tighter oversight and stricter penalties for supermarkets found endangering consumer health through deceptive sales tactics.
