Lagos shuts down Yaba Jumia outlet for environmental violations
In a decisive move, the Lagos State Government shut down a Jumia outlet on Herbert Macaulay Way in Yaba, citing environmental violations on Wednesday.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure through his official X account, revealing that it was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office due to unauthorized disposal of sewage.
According to Wahab, the Jumia outlet used a submersible pump to illegally discharge untreated sewage into the environment, contaminating nearby drainage systems and road edges.
Wahab stressed that the property owners would face legal consequences under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and ensuring public health.
Wahab stated, “The Jumia facility engaged the use of a submersible pumping machine to pump raw sewage from its sewage holding tanks directly into the environment on adjoining drainage outlets and road setbacks. The property owners will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, 2017.”
