Lagos shuts club over illegal parking, traffic obstruction

The Lagos State Government has shut down Vaniti Club House on Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, over what officials described as repeated traffic violations and disregard for public safety.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority led the enforcement operation on the club, citing illegal parking, road obstruction, and failure to comply with multiple warnings.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who was on ground during the operation, said the move followed several failed engagements with the club’s management.

“Despite repeated sensitisation and official notices, the club management remained uncooperative,” he said. “This sealing was necessary to uphold public safety.”

According to Bakare-Oki, Vaniti Club had become a frequent source of traffic congestion in the busy commercial area. He described their actions as a “deliberate and sustained violation” of the state’s traffic laws.

“The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law strictly prohibits obstruction of public roads and any activity that compromises commuter safety,” he added.

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, said the enforcement is part of a wider campaign targeting event centres and clubs that misuse public road space.

He said the club would remain shut until there is “total and verifiable compliance” with the law.

Bakare-Oki also warned that the government would continue to monitor other hospitality spots across the state.

“This is just the beginning. We will intensify monitoring and enforcement across other clubs, lounges, event centres, and recreational venues in Lagos State,” he said.
