Lagos police command and civil society groups have agreed on arrangements for today’s Democracy Day protests, designating Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota as the only approved protest venue.
After meeting with Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh, 15 civil society organizations agreed protesters will gather at Ikeja Bridge before marching together to Ojota. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the agreement in a statement Wednesday.
“All groups will meet at Ikeja Under-Bridge and proceed jointly to Gani Fawehinmi Park,” Hundeyin said. “No protests will hold elsewhere in Lagos.”
The meeting resolved that while some groups will celebrate Democracy Day quietly, others may protest peacefully without disrupting public order. Organizations promised to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the demonstrations.
Key civil society leaders present included Akintunde Adedeji (Access to Advocacy & Rights of People), Omokehinde Agbede (Center for Indigene Government Group), and representatives from Human Right Monitor and Committee for Defence of Human Rights.
Commissioner Jimoh assured adequate security across Lagos while urging residents to remain peaceful. Protest organizers pledged to share the agreements with absent groups for full compliance.
